Annual Community-Wide Interfaith Thanksgiving Service
Mecklenburg County's 44th annual Community-wide Interfaith Thanksgiving Service is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds to celebrate diversity and pray for unity and healing. Through music, prayers, sacred readings and messages from community leaders, the service offers the chance to come together in a spirit of understanding. The annual service is sponsored by MeckMIN, Mecklenburg's Metropolitan Interfaith Network, a coalition of more than 100 houses of faith. This year's theme encourages members of the community to consider the ways in which our interests and identities intersect to form a greater whole. Speakers include: *Travis Blue - A representative of the Catawba Indian Nation *James Howell - Senior Pastor of Myers Park United Methodist Church *Fred Robinson and LeDayne McLeese Polaski - The outgoing and incoming MeckMIN Executive Directors *John Ederer - Imam and Religious Director of the Muslim Community Center of Charlotte An original poem commissioned for the event will be written by local artist Hannah Hasan and given voice by five young people representing five different local faith traditions. The service will feature interfaith adult and children's choirs and an orchestra, prayers and readings from a wide variety of the faith groups in our community, and an offering to benefit Crisis Assistance Ministry and MeckMIN peace initiatives. All are encouraged to bring canned goods for Loaves & Fishes food pantry. All clergy are invited to join the processional that opens the service.
